Cantare Chorale
The Cantare Chorale, our symphonic choir of
over 100 auditioned voices, remains committed to bringing the highest musical
standards to its performances, associating with the finest instrumentalists
from Bay Area orchestras, and featuring nationally acclaimed vocal soloists.
Debuting in April 1999 with stunning performances of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis,
the Chorale is now the premiere choral ensemble of its size in the East Bay.
These past eleven seasons have included performances of J. S. Bach's Motets 1, 2,
Handel’s Messiah, Haydn's The Creation, Requiem settings
by Brahms, Durufle and Verdi, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Rachmaninoff's All-Night
Vigil, Brahms’ Nänie, Poulenc's Gloria, Barber's The
Prayers of Kierkegaard, Vaughan Williams’ Hodie, Bernstein’s Chichester
Psalms, Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri, Bloch’s Sacred Service,
Kodály’s Psalmus Hungaricus, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms,
Zemlinsky’s Psalm 13, Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity, Robert
Ray's Gospel Mass and Randall Thompson’s Frostiana. In addition,
they have performed several hundred shorter compositions, both a cappella
and with accompaniment. (See repertoire below.) In addition, the Chorale
continues to commission and premiere new works from prominent composers, the
latest being little man in a hurry
, by Eric Whitacre.
In June 2005, the Chorale embarked on its first international tour to Russia,
Finland, Estonia and Sweden, and in June 2008 traveled to Prague, Bratislava,
Budapest and Vienna, performing to standing-room-only crowds. In addition, they
gave the premiere performance of Bloch’s Sacred Service
in Eastern Europe, collaborating with the Martinú Orchestra from the Czech
Republic while performing in Slovakia. In June 2012, they will head for sunny
Spain, performing music in Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Barcelona and other cities
along the way. Yes, this group loves a challenge!
“Morales bathed the singers in warm sonorities, and the chorus raised a
breathtaking sound, singing with power and precision…The chorus was awesome
throughout.”
